CrossFit Games 2014-It's Happening

by jennifer16. January 2014 13:55

Nothing like a little peer pressure from the TOP FEMALE ATHLETE in your box to get you signed up for the 2014 CrossFit Games Open. Tongue Out It started innocently enough. Katie put out a little post on Facebook indicating that she had signed up. I replied with something like "oh, how I wish I could do it." And Katie replies with something to the effect of "you can do, get off your lazy ass and sign up." Wink So I did. See...peer pressure.

What are the CrossFit Games?
"The CrossFit Games are the world’s premier test to find the Fittest on Earth™. They are world-renowned as a grueling test for the world’s toughest athletes and a thrilling experience for spectators. Since its inception in 2007, the CrossFit Games have become “one of the fastest growing sports in America,” according to Forbes."

"CrossFit Games events are made up a broad range of functional movements. Functional movements move large loads (does my butt count??), long distances, quickly. These movements also form the basis of our exercise program. Make no mistake—the CrossFit Games are designed to test, not train fitness. The goal is to find the fittest athletes, not to produce an easily replicable workout program."

The Games are a three-stage journey.

1. The first step is the Open, a worldwide, inclusive, five-week competition that kicks off early in the spring. Want to participate? More info is available here.

2. The top athletes from the Open in each of the 17 regions around the world will qualify for the second stage of the competition—Regionals, a three-day, live competition.

3. The season culminates in the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games. At the Games, thousands of participants will be whittled down to around 100 of the fittest men and women in the world.

A key element to a fair test of fitness is the unknown and unknowable. Athletes cannot train for what they do not know. At each CrossFit Games, the athletes engage in a series of challenges unknown to them until right before the competition. The combination of highly-trained athletes and unknown workouts makes for an explosive mix.

Whew. So now that you understand what the games are all about, you can freak out right along with me.

5 weeks. 5 different workouts.

The 5 workouts will take place at my gym CrossFit En Fuego. I went last year and watched one of the workouts. 13.3 I believe. It was impressive. And oh so hard. It had muscle ups. I just watched in awe, my  mouth wide open as the top athletes in my gym went at it, and went at it hard. And I don't think any of them completed the entire WOD. That's how hard it was. H.A.R.D.

Just to give you an idea, this was the FIRST WOD for Women competing in my division last year:

MASTERS WOMEN -
Proceed through the sequence below completing as many reps as possible in 17 minutes of:
40 Burpees
35 pound Snatch, 30 reps
30 Burpees
55 pound Snatch, 30 reps
20 Burpees
75 pound Snatch, 30 reps
10 burpees
90 pound Snatch, as many reps as possible

HAHAHAHA!! Ya. 17 minutes. I can't even do a 75# snatch let alone 30 TIMES! But ya know what, I DON'T CARE! I'm going to go and give it my best. I'm going to push myself out of my comfort zone and I'm going to try.

Any words of wisdom??

Hate to break your bubble Jenny but in the open last year they started all masters at age 50.  So those of us in our 40's did what the "kids" in there 20's were doing.  It was fun, the atmosphere is contagious!  We all just did our best and were there to encourage each other.
